David has rallied many Quakers and others to concern for the battered East African country of Rwanda. The work of the African Great Lakes Initiative and the Friends Peace Teams has been supplementing the efforts of Rwandans as they seek healing and a hopeful future after the genocide of around 800,000 by the mid-1990's.

Recently, that includes work in Haiti, including dry composting toilets, to help agricultural productivity while improving health.But that just scratches the surface of Gigi's living out of tikkun alom - restoration of the world.

Gigi grew up as a reformed Jew in NYC, but is part of the Reconstructionist arm of Judaism, and a member of Congregation Shir Hadash in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has been active with their social action committee for 20 years, and is active with Tikkun Ha-Ir, a Milwaukee organization bringing together Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed, Reconstructionist and other Jews, integrating the study of Jewish texts with social action.

But her newest passion is Haiti, which she visited as part of a medical mission sponsored by St Thomas Aquinas of Naperville (Illinios). This has led to her subsequent connection with Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) and their efforts in Haiti. Gigi has organized a specific program for health in Haiti and will be traveling there in January, 2007, on the first phase of this program. Because of his experience with Bill, Tom found his life's work, helping people with disabilities own and run their own businesses.Tom's life has been fruitful and full of service, inspired by the Catholic teachings of his childhood. He was a Peace Corps director in Central America, taught social work at the university, and is a Gandhi scholar. But it is no exaggeration to say that his friendship with Bill Sachter changed the lives of Tom and many others. Bill entered the "Faribault Institution for Epileptics and Idiots" at the age of seven and spent 45 years there, being released in the mid-1960's. He so inspired the admiration of those around him that his life became the subject of two award winning movies - both Golden Globe and Emmy's - as well as a book by Tom, "The Unlikely Celebrity".

Tom's "retirement" at age 74 includes weeks of 70+ hours of his labor of love with the Extend A Dream foundation.

We have the privilege of talking to 2 of the surviving CO's of that war, George Watson, 91 years old, and Jack Phillips, now 86. Their experience in confronting the draft and in serving in the Civilian Public Service had a profound effect on the remainding 60+ years of their lives.Both George & Jack grew up Methodiist, a relative hotbed of pacifist convictions in some places at that time. George had already become a Quaker by the US start of WW2 and, as a father of 3 children, himself in advanced studies, confronted the draft at the tail-end of the war, while Jack, supported by his Methodist church, served about 5 years of alternative service, finding a home with the Religious Society of Friends along the way. Both currently reside in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Jack is a member of Twin Cities Friends Meeting, while George is a member of Minneapolis Friends Meeting.

She was in Palestine as part of the International Solidarity Movement, serving as a "human shield", protecting Palestinians and their homes.The Eau Claire Unitarian Universalist church had a service in her memory this past October and recorded some of what was shared. I also spoke with Rachel's aunt, Cathy Pierce, who is part of the Eau Claire UU congregation, about Rachel.

The home of the Nasrallah family, which Rachel died protecting, was subsequently destroyed, but has been rebuilt by the Rebuilding Alliance.

Rachel's story has been shared with the world through the play, My Name Is Rachel Corrie, created from Rachel's own words and performed in London, New York, Seattle, and in Rachel's home town, Olympia, Washington.

Bill is well-disposed to "meet people where they are", will an open and inquiring mind that looks for value wherever he can find it. Frank Montano and the beauty of the Native American flute drew him into an in-depth study and practice of Native American ways, while curiosity and openness drew him into yoga, all the time without loosing his Methodist roots.

She brought principled action to Australia's federal Senate, earning her the scorn of many "business as usual" politicians, as she served as advocate and voice in Australia's Parliament for a number of progressive issues for 8 years.Jo grew up Catholic in a conservative family, deeply absorbing Catholic teachings of compassion and care for the poor. While traveling extensively as a young adult, Jo witnessed masses of poor people held down by the religious, economic and political limitations, and began a transition away from conservative doctrines. Jo has been active with the Friends(Quaker) meeting in Perth, Western Australia since 1972.

Jo's first election to the senate was as part of the Nuclear Disarmament Party, but national coalition-building led to the national establishment of the Green Party.

Inspired by the example of the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), he has helped organize the Muslim Peacemaker Teams (MPT).Sami left Iraq in 1976, eventually settling in the Twin Cities and opening Sinbads, a Middle Eastern restaurant. When visiting Iraq following his mother's death, he was struck by his duty to help rebuild the devestated nation. Inspired by Tom Fox and the other CPT members, Sami organized the Muslim Peacemaker Teams. One of their first actions was to organize a group of Shi'a Muslims to help clean up Faluja, a Sunni stronghold.

He was a member of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's staff and a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War.Born into a Catholic family, raised on military bases through much of his childhood, attending a military academy in high school and enrolled in ROTC, it hardly seemed likely that Chuck would end up an activist, peace advocate and Quaker - but that is the direction God led him. From his involvement in civil rights, including participation in the Selma Voting Rights Crusade, to his eventual declaration as a CO during Vietnam, and to his current role as director of Quaker House, Chuck is dedicated to deep thought and resolute action. Marty, raised Catholic, was refused CO status during the Vietnam War, and ended up convicted for refusing induction.Marty's experience in confronting the draft, and the alternate service he ended up performing, became a turning point in his life. He eventually ended up in Eau Claire, got first an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, then an MA in Religion and Theology, though Marty dislikes labels and the tendency to categorize people and their beliefs. Marty has attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Eau Claire since about 1990 and has taught ethics courses at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

She does not feel positive about the overall role that the Russian Orthodox Church plays in civic life, both because of the way they use people and because of the restricted roles which they attempt to assign to women. Sarah Harder has made the transition from Catholic to Episcopalian to Unitarian Universalist, which is her current religious home.

She moved to Beirut with her Lebanese husband in 1969, at the age of 26. Her 14 years there included the first 8 years of the Lebanese civil war. Her first-hand experience with and love of the Middle East, with the Muslims, Jews and Christians of that ravaged land and of the US make her an invaluable resource and inspiriation for peace work in that region.Cathy was raised and practiced as a Roman Catholic until shortly after her return to the USA. She is part of the National Peace Foundation, author of 2 books, and is much in demand as a commentator on Middle East developments. Inge Donato will finish her 6-month term in February 2006 a couple weeks before her husband, Joseph Donato, begins his 27-month sentence. Kevin McKee begins his 24-month sentence in December. We visit with Kevin and Joe today, and with another elder of their group, Charles Micsko. All 3 have been members of the organization for more than 25 years and have observed its principles, including the nonpayment of Federal taxes that would go to war.

The organization was founded by Leo J. Volpe, known by members of the group as the prophet Jeremiah. Group efforts are concentrated around Bible study and insights, and faithful adherence to the Biblical truths, including preparation for the end times prophesied in the Book of Revelation.
