Julie Schmitt's Song of the Soul |
This is a very interestingThis is a very interesting interview: Julie sounds very grounded in spite of (because of?) the wide variety of music that moves her and spiritual backgrounds. Although Julie said she was nervous, she didn't sound like it: Mark was especially skillful in his questions and ability to edit and flow in and out of the songs. 4 stars :) PS: Although this interview is from 06, I just heard it and just met Julie (briefly) this summer. I and my friends in and around Washington DC are grateful to Julie for introducing me to Mark and northern spirit radio! | Mary Shapiro (not verified) | |

| It was very interestingIt was very interesting listening to Ellen describe her life struggles and her eventual spirituality that has transformed her into the wonderful person she is today. I met Ellen many, many years ago while attending college and had no idea the struggles she was going through with her religious upbringing and the guilt that came about because of it. I can tell you she had a definite impact on my life and I am a better person today for having known her. Hearing now what she had to go through and how she has survived and become an even stronger person doesn't surprise me one bit. I apologize if I in any way contributed to her struggles as I had no idea what she was going through - she hid it very well. While I only knew her for a short period of time, I am grateful that our paths crossed. The little time I was able to spend with her helped me to fight my own "demons" at the time as well. I wish only the best for her! Her positive beams of light were shining bright even in her worst times. Thanks for sharing your thoughts during this program. | College Memory (not verified) | ||

| I chose to listen to JudithI chose to listen to Judith Levine's Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping in my goal to simplify my life. I learned a lot from Mark's interview with Judith, and while I still don't know if I could do what she did, I know I did enjoy hearing another perspective on consumerism. | Barbara E. | This story is told honestly –This story is told honestly – that, I think adds to the appeal of the 7 wonderfully crafted songs Julie shares with us. I got tripped up a bit when she talked about the origins of ‘The Day We Let Go' and ‘Labyrinth' – it's hard to imagine that such a positive sprit as Julie's could, or would every have to suffer. But realistically, I think the experiences she speaks of where necessary in order for her to create songs of this depth. It may have been her way of distancing herself from her troubles and losses. In a sense, I see her some of her songs as prayers. In particular, her writing ‘Labyrinth' during that particularly difficult period of time she speaks of seems to have brought her closer to those she lost – much like prayers do for me. | Richard (not verified) | ||
